Heat and haze: NYC battles double weather threat

New York City is expanding its emergency response as dangerous heat and smoke from Canadian wildfires continue to impact the five boroughs on Thursday.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani says hundreds of cooling centers will remain open across the city as heat index values climb into the low 90s and air quality is expected to reach the “unhealthy” category.
The city is also expanding the distribution of free KN95 masks. They are available at New York Public Library, Queens Public Library and Brooklyn Public Library branches, NYPD precincts, select FDNY firehouses and major transit hubs.
The Department of Social Services has activated both Code Red and Code Grey, increasing outreach to people experiencing homelessness. COOL vans are also being deployed to distribute masks, water and other supplies while connecting people with air-conditioned shelter.
Officials urge New Yorkers to stay in air-conditioned spaces when possible, limit outdoor activity, stay hydrated and check on older adults, children and anyone with heart or lung conditions.
