Spirit Airlines faces uncertain future as shutdown concerns grow

Travelers at Newark Airport worry about upcoming flights as the budget carrier struggles to secure emergency funding

After years of financial turbulence, Spirit Airlines may be approaching its final descent. The struggling low-cost carrier is reportedly preparing to cease operations after failing to secure enough emergency funding to stay afloat.

At Newark Liberty International Airport, travelers are already feeling uneasy about what comes next.

Two women heading to Orlando say their outbound trip is with another airline—but they are scheduled to return home on Spirit.

“They're cheaper. I've actually never flown Spirit… my first flight will be Monday coming back so I was trying it out, but you know what—you’re purchasing something cheaper, it comes at a cost and the cost is that also that the airline might shut down,” said Destany Batista of New York.

Cynthia Tong says the uncertainty is weighing on her travel plans.

“They just didn't say when operations are gonna be shutting down so I'm just worried… Who knows if I'll make it back or if I need to book another flight—that's just my major concern,” Tong said.

A proposed $500 million rescue package remains uncertain, with President Donald Trump saying a final proposal is still under review. Meanwhile, Spirit has faced mounting challenges in recent years, including rising fuel costs, weaker travel demand, and a blocked merger with JetBlue in 2024 that some analysts believe could have saved the airline.

“I think if a company has proved several times that they're not economically viable then you just have to put your money into another airline that is and that you can trust with your own dollars,” Batista added.

Industry experts warn that if Spirit collapses, it could lead to fewer budget-friendly travel options and potentially higher ticket prices across the board.

“There’s a very real possibility that they might be able to get their money back if the business stays afloat, but unfortunately if it's in bankruptcy and all the money is eaten up then there may not be that opportunity,” said business attorney and analyst Parag Amin. “Certainly if you booked on a credit card, perhaps that's a good way to try and get a cancellation or a refund.”

Experts advise travelers with upcoming Spirit flights to begin looking at alternative airlines and routes as a precaution.

For now, Spirit says its flights are still operating—but its future remains very much up in the air.
