The students at P.S. 100 Isaac Clason Elementary School took action to help improve their neighborhood after they noticed a ton of litter.

As part of a class project the kids led an initiative calling for more public trash receptacles. The students wrote to Council Member Amanda Farías who worked with the New York City Department of Sanitation to get the trash baskets installed. Farías says in part “What started as a classroom project turned into real action because their advocacy was clear, thoughtful, and impossible to overlook. I wanted this to be a defining moment for them—to see that their local elected official listened..."

The students were excited to see the baskets. "We saw a lot of garbage on the ground during our science project," one student explained. "We noticed people throwing trash everywhere, and we thought if there were trash cans, our community could be cleaner."

DSNY trash baskets have now been installed along Lafayette Avenue, between Taylor and Thieriot Avenues—helping keep the neighborhood cleaner for everyone.
