A Mahopac man is facing animal cruelty charges after police say he abandoned three small dogs in a dark basement without food or water.

SPCA detectives say the dogs were discovered caged and surrounded by filthy conditions inside the home on Elanor Drive.

The dogs were starved and severely ill, according to investigators.

Authorities say 62-year-old Michael Ward was arrested following an investigation on March 25.

Officials say the dogs are recovering and will so be available for adoption.

Anyone with additional information about the case is urged to call 845-520-6915.
