Residents express outrage as one Mount Vernon apartment nears one year without cooking gas

Residents at 266 South Fulton Ave. expressed outrage Friday after almost a year of being unable to use gas to cook with.

Many of the tenants tell News 12 they rely on air fryers, take out and the hot plate management provided to them.

"We had a bad Christmas, we had a bad Thanksgiving—you know what it is to plug stuff up and sit there for hours waiting for stuff to be cooked," said resident Andre who has lived in the building for 16 years.

According to Con Edison, the gas had to be turned off because they found leaks in piping inside the building.

"I'm glad that they stopped the gas leak but its been a year and we're not getting any answers," said Andre.

In a memo sent out last Friday, the building's management addressed the cooking gas lines saying they could not be repaired as originally planned due to their location.

The letter later says that plans to install a new cooking gas system have been completed and sent to the building department for approval.

Management anticipates the service to be restored by June.

A spokesperson with Con Edison told News 12 work still needs to be completed on the customer's side before they can perform a safety test and restore service.

The City of Mount Vernon released the following statement:

"At this time, the applicant has submitted plans to the City; however, he has not yet filed the required amendment permit application for the gas restoration project. The City has advised the applicant to submit the amendment application through the OpenGov system and upload the corresponding plans for review.

Once the application, plans, and all required documentation are submitted, the Building Department and Fire Department will review the materials. If everything is in order, the City will issue the permit for the gas restoration work.

Upon completion of the permitted work and restoration of gas service, the issues related to this matter should be resolved."
