Police returned to a Mount Vernon funeral home on Thursday, where a director was charged with operating without a license.

Several officers from the state Attorney General's Office went to Camelot Funeral Home. Police from Mount Vernon and Westchester County's Crime Scene Unit were also at the funeral home.

Police put up a sign about the search warrant after a locksmith arrived to the Stevens Avenue Facility.

The search comes after funeral director Michael Naughton pleaded not guilty to one count of operating the home without a license.

News 12 caught up with Naughton on Thursday as investigators conducted their search.

"Everything's still premature," Naughton said.

A complaint revealed an inspection conducted by the state's health department last month found 17 boxes of cremated remains and 13 bodies at the funeral home.
The complaint says Naughton was also aware that the home's license to operate had been suspended since May 2025.

"I don't see the extreme drama. He just needs to get relicensed," said one man in Mount Vernon.

Families who dealt with the funeral home told us that they feel otherwise.

Naughton is expected back in court next week.
