Mount Kisco water tank leaking since 2022 per county officials; village plans repair

A 250,000-gallon water tank that serves about 80 homes in Mount Kisco's Chase neighborhood has been leaking since 2022, Westchester County officials said, noting that the health department flagged the leak during a water quality inspection.

A county spokesperson said the village has communicated with the county about how to fix the Chase tank, which is leaking close to 3,000 gallons a day.

First having denied the existence of a leak on Jan. 6, Village Manager Edward Brancati acknowledged during a Jan. 20 village board meeting that there was a leak.

Chase residents Anne Redhead and Theresa Flora are annoyed they had to personally trek up a hill to the tank to record video to prove the leak's existence, which prompted the village to announce a new plan to fix it.

"I'm very disappointed to hear it's been leaking for a full three years, and that it wasn't attended to at that time," Redhead said Tuesday. "I'm also concerned about the safety and integrity of that tank, and of our neighborhood."

Village officials said they are now shopping for parts and equipment to be able to take the tank offline, and then either repair or replace it.

The county's spokesperson said the tank has full pressure, and the local water system has not been compromised.

Flora is wary considering past water service problems in recent years and the sudden closure of the Preston Avenue Bridge on Dec. 3.

"I'm not shocked to hear it's been leaking for three years," Flora said. "We have a history here of just letting our infrastructure crumble before we plan to fix it."

Work at the site has not begun yet.

It appears no one has been up the hill to inspect the tank since before last week's snowfall, as there are no footprints around the tank.

News 12 reached out several times to Brancati to inquire about a timeline for the repair and to find out what action the village has taken regarding the tank since 2022.

Brancati has not responded.
