In Yonkers, Linda Migliaccio says every snowfall brings the same question: who will help dig her out.
Cardiologist Dr. Nvjot Sobti, of Northwell Health, says the risk is real and significant.
She explains there is even a medical term, “Shoveling STEMI,” referring to heart attacks triggered by snow shoveling. Over the past 24 hours, she says 50 to 60% of cardiology consults involved patients with chest pain which began while shoveling.
Dr. Sobti urges people to know their limits, consider their fitness level and risk factors like high blood pressure, smoking and obesity. The safest option, he says, is to avoid shoveling and ask for help from family or neighbors.
For seniors like Linda, that support isn’t always easy to find. If you are unsure whether you are healthy enough to shovel, doctors recommend consulting your physician first.
