The Humane Society of Westchester at New Rochelle is asking for the public to help find the couple they say is responsible for leaving a dog outside the shelter.

Surveillance video shared by the Humane Society shows two people pulling in to the parking lot at around 3:30 a.m. In a matter of minutes, the pair set up a crate, put the dog in it and drove off.

According to the shelter, no one knew the dog was out there until workers showed up five hours later.

"I understand if you want to bring your dog to the shelter if you can't take care of it anymore, but you don't have to do it at 3 a.m.," said Larchmont resident Sophie Sirkman.

Workers at the shelter declined to do an interview but tell News 12 that this is not okay. They said that the female dog is doing fine but she is still shaken up.

News 12 talked with people who had mixed reactions to the video. Some feel that the couple should have waited until the shelter was open instead of leaving the dog alone in the cold and dark. Others feel the dog could've been left in worst places.

"I'm just glad that nothing worse happened to the dog. It was not as good as finding a home for the dog during normal business hours, but at least they brought it to a place where there was going to be help," said New Rochelle resident Charles Shaw.

The shelter says anyone who can no longer care for a dog should contact their local shelter during regular business hours. If you happen to find a lost pet outside of regular business hours, the shelter encourages you to contact your local police department, as most of them have after-hours emergency protocols.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the shelter.
