Houseplants are one of the easiest ways to make a house feel like home. Whether it’s for decor or because you love to garden, I have some great plants that are unusual and so much easier than they look.
The nice thing about growing hundreds of plants inside my home is all the experience that comes with it. And while many of my unusual plants are very high maintenance, there are a few that are surprisingly easy.
Ponytail palm (beaucarnea recurvata)
Looking for a plant with awesome hair? This succulent is for you! It’s not a true palm tree and it has great drought tolerance.
This plant is great for people who don’t want to repot a plant, miss a few waterings, and have a bright and sunny window.
Philodendron
This group of plants comes in all shapes, sizes and colors, but what they share are gorgeous heart-shaped leaves.
This is a great plant if you’re looking for something that can handle lower light conditions (ideally close to a north-facing window). It’s not picky about watering as long as the soil drains fast. It does prefer more water instead of less.
Bromeliads
There are hundreds of different types, but what makes this plant unique is its ability to grow in very low light and very little soil.
Most bromeliads you buy at the store are called torch bromeliads and come with a tiered bloom in the center. This bloom will die in three to six months, but baby plants will replace the mother and eventually bloom, too!
This is a great plant for situations with very little light, and you will never need to repot them. These plants like to have their leaves showered with water once every week or two.
