This month marks one year of no gas for hundreds of people at a housing complex in Yonkers.
“It’s a problem, it has been a problem," says Derrick Tillis.
Tillis' mom and hundreds of others at the Palisade Towers housing complex in Yonkers have been without gas for nearly a year.
“She can't use the oven so basically 50% of her meals aren’t getting cooked the way she wants them to," Tillis explains.
At the end of last August, leaks were found in a gas line.
Since then, the city and housing authority have been working to get things fixed by switching over the utility from gas to electric.
In the meantime, people who live there have been given hot plates and convection ovens for cooking.
“Thanksgiving wasn’t easy. Another Thanksgiving and holidays are coming up," says Ionna Houser, who lives at Palisade Towers.
Leaders with the Municipal Housing Authority for the City of Yonkers say they know the situation isn't ideal, but things are moving in the right direction to begin the needed work.
“We are working with all the necessary approvals to get it all together. We’re really excited that everything is coming together to finally be able to do the work," says Carlos Laboy-Diaz, who is with the Municipal Housing Authority for the City of Yonkers.
Laboy-Diaz says work is expected to begin Sept. 1.
They are aiming for it to be fully done by next summer.
