City officials announced that a new school will be built where the old Mulford Gardens housing complex was located in Yonkers.

Superintendent Anibal Soler said the school, which would be pre-K to eighth grade, is estimated to serve around 800 students.

A post on the city's Facebook page said the building will be state-of-the-art and have amenities like a gym, library and a pool.

However, comments under the post suggest that not everyone is happy about the new school.

Some people News 12 spoke with had the same hesitations.

"Well, I was just thinking that maybe they should fix up the school that closed up the street instead of building another one," one woman said.

The announcement about the new school comes just weeks after officials voted to close Museum School 25 at the end of the school year.

"Renovate the schools. You don't keep building and building. You're wasting our money," a resident named Loretta said.

Superintendent Soler said he understands why people have their concerns.

"So, if you look at School 25, it's a great question. Lot of folks would obviously have that [question.] A couple things happened, the capacity there would only be a couple hundred kids so that's one, the age of the building, the amount of repairs that were needed [we're a lot,]" Soler said.

The superintendent said they don't know how much the project will cost just yet, but added that funding for it was pre-approved through the Yonkers Joint Schools Construction Board.
