Dozens of protestors took to the streets of Port Chester Saturday afternoon, determined to protect the village's large immigrant community.
"We are a mixed bowl. Mexico, Argentina, Peru, Uruguay – we have everyone here," said organizer Jackie Contreras.
During President Donald Trump’s first week in office, he signed 10 executive orders on immigration and issued a slew of edicts to carry out promises of mass deportations and border security. Some actions were felt immediately and others are being challenged in court.
The demonstration for immigrants' rights kicked off with a march from Veterans Memorial Park, ending with chants and speeches in the parking lot at nearby St. John Bosco Catholic Church on Westchester Avenue.
"We want the immigrants of Port Chester to know they're not alone. We want to show them the empathy that is not being shown by this administration," organizer Maria Harris said.
"They're not just going for the criminal immigrants. They're going for everybody that's illegal. People aren't going to work. Kids aren't going to school. Some people are waiting for their papers and if they get caught up in the system, then it's done for them. We want them to know you have rights and they are in a community that is backing behind them."
