Rockland brush fire sparks message from officials to public

Rockland County's director of Fire and Emergency Services, Chris Kear, tells News 12 in a statement "we are asking our residents to be extra cautious due to these dry conditions. No open burning at all." The message comes after a brush fire on a mountain in the Hillburn area.

A brush fire in Rockland County over the weekend is now contained but it is sparking officials to share a message with residents.

Dozens of firefighters were high above Rockland on Nordkop Mountain fighting to contain a brush fire in dry - windy conditions.

"It was a labor intensive operation,” said Hillburn Fire Chief Nelson Scott. "We used blowers to try to get the leaves and brush away from the fire. So it didn't have as much fuel burn. It did get inside the ground, so we were digging down to try to stop it."

Chief Scott says the fire started Saturday and was largely contained later on Sunday.

It was a team effort, with multiple agencies from Rockland and neighboring Tuxedo and Mahwah.

Local fire officials have a message for the public.

"If you see smoke or a column of smoke just let us know so we can try to get there as fast as possible so it doesn't spread,” said chief Scott. “Especially with the winds and stuff. With how dry it is, it will spread fast."

Rockland County's director of Fire and Emergency Services, Chris Kear, tells News 12 in a statement "we are asking our residents to be extra cautious due to these dry conditions. No open burning at all."

There is no word yet on what caused the brush fire.
