People in Ossining gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday to officially launch a new electric bikeshare program in the village.

Officials said the Project MOVER E-bikeshare program soft launched back in August. So, Wednesday's ceremony served as the formal kickoff for the program.

Officials said the project is in its pilot phase and 50 fully electric bikes are available for residents and visitors in Ossining to use.

They're located at 11 stations throughout the village.

Trips cost just $1 to unlock a bike and 12 cents per minute of use.

Mayor Rika Levin said the bikes will provide another low-cost form of transportation that is also beneficial to the environment.

"We'd love to see fewer people getting in the car in the morning, driving to the train station, having the car sit all day," Levin said. "The emissions that [are] wasted [are] just not useful to anybody."
