Subway surfing is on the rise in the city, with the NYPD reporting a 59% increase in the past year. Deputy Chief Steven Hill, of the NYPD Transit Bureau, says they’ve caught kids as young as 9 years old riding on top of trains.

“We want kids to save their lives. We don’t want kids getting hurt,” Hill said.

The NYPD is working with the MTA and Department of Transportation to educate the public on the dangers. They also use drones to track and stop these incidents.

Parents are urged to talk to their children and monitor what they’re watching online.

The NYPD and MTA say if you see a subway surfer, tell the train conductor and call 911.
