An explosion at a home in Monticello Saturday night left a family displaced and sent a man to the hospital for severe burns.

Fire officials say the explosion occurred at around 11 p.m. as the family was moving into the home at 2 Emily St.

Family members say they smelled gas or propane before the huge explosion ripped the home from its foundation and knocked bricks off the exterior walls.

Nine people were inside the home at the time, according to authorities.

Officials say a man who was in the basement sustained severe burns and was rushed to Garnet Health Medical Center in Orange County. The rest of the family escaped unharmed.

Firefighters say the house was heated by propane. Two tanks were found in the back of the house.

Officials condemned the building due to major damage inside the home.

The Red Cross is helping the displaced family, according to authorities. The cause of the explosion remains under investigation.
