A man pleaded not guilty to stabbing his wife and 2-year-old daughter to death inside their Brentwood home on Sunday.

According to police, officers responded to a home on Jefferson Avenue after Zanoor Jaffari stabbed his wife, Misbah Batool, and their daughter, Iazia Zanoor.

The suspect's mother, who lives in the home with other extended family members, made a frantic 911 call, police say.

"Patrol units discovered one female, and a child with significant stab wounds," says Suffolk County Police Department Chief of Detectives John Rowan. "A man was discovered having an unknown medical event, possibly an overdose."

Batool, 33, and Zanoor, 2, were transported to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore where they were pronounced dead.

According to the prosecution, when police arrived at the family's home, Jaffari was standing in the middle of a room covered in the victims' blood.

Jaffari was transported to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip for medical evaluation and released.

Prosecutors said in court that there was a history of domestic physical abuse and the weapon used was found at the scene.

Police charged Jaffari, 31, with two counts of murder in the second degree.

Attorney Lawrence Carra says that they believe Jaffari "was a loving and compassionate father."

Jaffari and his wife also have a 5-year-old boy, who was inside the home and unharmed at the time of the attack, police say.

Jaffari faces 25 years to life consecutively if convicted. He was held without bail and is due back in court on Aug. 16.
