Woodlands High School students not allowed to walk at graduation after senior prank
Video given to News 12 shows students throwing eggs in a classroom, and according to a letter from the district, damages totaled around $10,000.
About one-third of the graduating seniors at Woodlands High School have been told they are not allowed to participate in graduation on Friday.
The decision handed down by Greenburgh Superintendent of Schools Dr. Linda Iverson came earlier on Tuesday.
Last Monday, dozens of students entered Woodlands Middle/High School at around 8:30 p.m. to take part in what has been referred to as "senior prank night."
It's unclear if the school sanctions the event but several students and parents told News 12 that multiple high school staff members had texted students alerting them that they were "all set to go ahead with the senior prank."
Students said the faculty gave them rules about what was and was not allowed during the event.
Many students said they showed up with toilet paper, sticky notes, and balloons to disperse around the building. All items they were told were allowed.
Within an hour, some students brought eggs and threw them into classrooms, according to a video given to News 12. Others vandalized parts of the building and caused about $10,000 in damages, according to a letter sent to parents by Dr. Iverson.
The district had been investigating who was involved over the last week and decided today anyone they identified would not be allowed to participate in the graduation ceremony.
The decision affected roughly 30 seniors.
Students expressed remorse and parents shared their frustration with the decision.
Many argued those who were directly involved in the worst of the damages should be held responsible and punished, not everyone who was there. Others said they believe there should be repercussions, but missing graduation should not be one of them.
"I have dreamed so long to be on that stage to finally make my parents proud. I'm sorry. I want to be a part of the Latinx students who graduates this year. Again, I truly hope you reconsider your decision," shared one student during Tuesday night's board of education meeting.
Neither Dr. Iverson nor any of the board members responded on Tuesday night.

Graduation is on Friday.
