Westchester and Rockland counties kicked off their Juneteenth celebrations early.

Juneteenth commemorates the ending of slavery in the United States.

Thursday night's celebrations ahead of June 19 at the Bedford Hills Community House included dancing, art displays and guest speakers.

Joyce Cole emceed the event and said she hopes people celebrate Juneteenth with an open heart. She added that the month-long events are about learning and community.

Cole said she hopes people understand why Juneteenth is a profound federal holiday.

"I hope they walk away with a sense of understanding of the importance of Juneteenth and it's considerable impact on American history. This is not just a black holiday; this is a Holiday for America."

There are several Juneteenth events happening throughout June across the Hudson valley and not only on June 19.
