Officials have released new details on efforts to address a major gas outage in Yonkers.

The outage happened in August of 2024 at the Palisade Towers housing complex. A series of leaks were found in a main gas line.

Residents were given hot plates and convection ovens for cooking over the last two years.

Officials have been working to get things fixed by switching over the utility from gas to electric. But that takes time and money.

Officials with the Municipal Housing Authority for the City of Yonkers say major progress has been made in installing new stoves for residents.

"We already have, out of the eight buildings, we have two with the stoves that are working. We have another four buildings that should be with the stoves working by the second week of September and the rest of the buildings will be by the first week of November," said Carlos Laboy-Diaz, chief operating officer of the Yonkers Municipal Housing Authority.

Officials say the second phase of the project has already started.

"We're installing electrical boxes in some of the buildings to provide additional power to install what is called the 'gradient unit,' which is a unit that will be in every bedroom and the living room, provides air conditioning and heating," says Laboy-Diaz.

Some residents tell News 12 that they are frustrated with how long things have taken. Others said they understand and they've adapted.
