More than 16,000 foreigners arrived in Ukraine to join the war effort, including two people from Westchester.
The two Westchester men didn't answer when their friend Oleh Bilovus called Wednesday afternoon.
"The last time I spoke to them two days ago, they were in on their way to Kyiv, and I don't know where they are," says Bilovus.
Bilovus says all he knows is that his friends are among the thousands of Ukranian-born people across the globe now returning to their home country to help in the war effort.
The men, who do not want to be identified, are both 25 years old.
They have no military experience but told Bilovus they felt compelled to go to the front lines and help.
"They said, 'We are willing to do whatever we have to do,"' says Bilovus.
Bilovus is with the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America, which is helping coordinate relief efforts in Westchester County.
He left Ukraine seven years ago and has family, including his brother, near the fighting. His brother told him over the phone that his wife and three children have fled the country.
Just last week, Ukraine's government launched a website to recruit foreign fighters.
Americans are not restricted from going to Ukraine and joining the fight.
