Residents gathered at Ramapo City Hall Sunday to show their unwavering support for Ukraine as the community and the world marked one year since the Russian invasion.

Participants at the gathering displayed the Ukrainian flag's colors of blue and yellow.

"As a little girl growing up in Ukraine under the Soviet Union and witnessing firsthand what the regime had to offer, and as a proud citizen of the U.S. now – I could not just sit and watch the devastation in my home country and that's why I'm here today with all of you here," said organizer Oksanah Hauser.

"It's hard to believe it's been a year since Vladimir Putin waged this vile war and invaded Ukraine and has brought about a massacre of the Ukrainian people and homeland," said Rep. Mike Lawler.

The Ukrainian community in Rockland County remains steadfast in their support of their homeland.

"The fight of the Ukrainian people and the nation of Ukraine for independence, freedom and democracy is our fight and we stand with you,” said Ramapo Town Supervisor Michael Specht. “It is the fight of all people with good will throughout the West who value democracy, freedom, independence and the right for people to live peacefully in their own country."

Lawler said the United States needs to escalate military support to Ukraine.

"To provide the Ukrainian military the arms, weaponry and air support needed to win this war and win it quickly," Lawler elaborated.
