Two mothers are facing serious charges after a 14-year-old baby sitter went missing with her 6-year-old charge for more than a week.
According to police, on March 31 Tammy Edwards? 14-year-old daughter left her Yonkers home on Ash Street with a 6-year-old girl she regularly baby-sits. One week later, Phyllis Williams, the mother of the 6-year-old, went to police to report her child missing.Police contacted the sitter by phone. The sitter dropped the little girl off at Yonkers? Third Police Precinct and sent her in with a suicide note. Police caught up with the teen in a cab moments later.
Yonkers Police Commissioner Edmund Hartnett says both mothers are in serious legal trouble. Williams and Edwards are charged with endangering the welfare of their children. Authorities also discovered Williams' Riverview Place apartment was in disarray and there was no food in the refrigerator.
The 6-year-old is in the custody of the county Child Protective Agency. The teen baby sitter was charged with juvenile delinquency and is scheduled to appear in Family Court. She was also evaluated at St. Joseph's Medical Center?s psychiatric ward.
