A police-involved shooting injured two people in Mount Vernon on Friday.
The incident occurred near the intersection of Tecumseh and Beekman avenues.
The Mount Vernon police commissioner says the incident was related to an NYPD undercover operation. He says no Mount Vernon officers were involved in the shooting.
Neighbors told News 12 that they heard more than a dozen shots fired, many of which damaged cars along the roadway.
The undercover officer was involved in a long-term gun case being run by the NYPD Firearms Investigation Unit.
The undercover officer was meeting with an individual who had previously sold him guns in the Bronx, according to the NYPD. That individual allegedly wanted to meet the undercover officer in Mount Vernon Friday to sell two guns.
A third man approached as the two were sitting in the parked car. That man pointed a gun at the undercover officer and demanded money. The suspect took off with cash and a gold chain from the man with the officer. It is unclear if the robbery was set up.
The NYPD officer fired at the third man and a second man on the street, who News 12 is told was an innocent bystander.
Both people who were shot were taken to area hospitals. There is no word on the condition of the suspect, but the innocent bystander is in serious condition at Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx.
The man selling guns allegedly fled the scene. Police have not said where he lives.
