Dozens of firefighters rushed to put out a fire at a commercial building Sunday afternoon in Yonkers.
Flames broke out inside the Yonkers Building Material Company near Saw Mill River and Tuckahoe roads.
The two-alarm fire produced heavy smoke that could be seen for several blocks. At least two firefighters suffered minor injuries, according to the Yonkers fire chief.
"Because of the nature of the business in the building, there were a lot of building supplies, chemicals, roofing, tarring. A lot of dangerous things," said Chief Joseph Citrone of the Yonkers Fire Department. "It actually could have been a lot worse than it was. Our crews were able to get in there and put out the fire before anything could really spread."
Crews say the business was locked up, which made it harder to access. The chief says the business will likely be closed for several days for cleanup. Officials are still investigating the cause.
