At least two young boys died in New York from a disease that may be connected to COVID-19 exposure.
One of the victims, a Westchester resident, was 7 years old. He was being treated at the Maria Fereri Children’s Hospital before he passed away.
It's still unclear when the 7-year-old died and if the cause of death was from underlying issues. County health officials say he had serious neurological complications related to the rare disease known as pediatric multi-system inflammatory syndrome.
The state is reporting 73 children sick with the illnesses associated with COVID-19. The second victim died in New York City on Thursday. He was 5 years old.
"This is every parent’s nightmare,” said Gov. Andrew Cuomo at his daily briefing.
Some of the symptoms that parents should be looking out for include:
  • Fever lasting more than 5 days
  • Severe stomach pain causing diarrhea or vomiting
  • Change in skin color — becoming pale, patchy or blue
  • Trouble breathing
While it's still unclear exactly how many children in the region are infected, it is known that nearly a dozen other children with similar symptoms have been treated at Maria Fereri within the last 10 days, ranging from infants to teenagers.
State and local health officials say there are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the two boys.
