More than a dozen family members in New Rochelle were hospitalized due to an apparent carbon monoxide leak early Saturday morning.
Police say they received a call around 4:30 a.m. after a carbon monoxide alarm went off at a home on North Avenue. Officials say 24 people ranging in age from 2 months to 93 years old were staying at the home to celebrate Passover.
A relative says 15 people were taken to Jacobi Medical Center, including eight children. Those hospitalized all are expected to be OK.
Officials say nine other family members refused treatment.
Officials say the carbon monoxide level was not excessively high, but was high enough that someone had to inspect the home.
They say the carbon monoxide came from a malfunction in the oven that had been on since 5 p.m. Friday when the family was having Seder.
Officials say the carbon monoxide built up and spread through the house quickly because of an open laundry chute that was next to the stove.
Carbon monoxide is often referred to as a "silent killer" because it is odorless and colorless and can cause loss of consciousness without notice.
