Electric vehicle owners in Yonkers now have a new way to power up — right from the curb.

City officials unveiled Yonkers’ first-ever curbside electric vehicle charging station on Warburton Avenue on Tuesday. The unveiling marked a major step in expanding public EV infrastructure throughout the city.

Unlike traditional charging stations, the new unit draws electricity directly from a nearby building. City leaders say this approach makes the technology easier and less expensive to install.

The company It’s Electric secured a grant that made the project possible along with partnerships that involved the building owner and Sachi Nails and Body.

Officials say this charger is just the beginning.

“It started with a grant that we received and a pilot program, which led us to It’s Electric,” said William Serratore, director of the Yonkers Office of Sustainability. “The grant will allow us to do up to 20 of these. It allows us to provide more public parking and to incorporate the public-private entities like this.”

The city plans to install up to 20 building-powered curbside EV chargers across Yonkers as part of the initiative.

Officials have not announced as of Tuesday where the additional charging stations will be located or when they will be installed.
