Fifteen first responders were honored Monday after their heroic efforts in saving one of their own after he went into cardiac arrest.

The firefighters are associated with Pelham/EVAC, Pelham Manor Fire Department, Pelham Fire Department and Pelham Manor Police Department.

On Saturday, April 12, multiple first responders were called to reports of a possible dryer fire.

Moments after the fire was contained, Pelham Manor Fire Capt. John Gerken suffered a sudden medical emergency and collapsed. It was quickly determined that Gerken had gone into cardiac arrest.

With the quick thinking skills of the responders on the scene, they were able to work together to administer life-saving medical support to the captain.

"I'm just so grateful for what happened and the timing of it," said Gerken shortly after the ceremony concluded. "The doctors say you have less than a 1% chance in the field, and it makes you very humble, so these guys saved my life."

County Executive Ken Jenkins also stopped by the event, praising the honorees' heroism and service.
