A 13-year-old boy died Sunday evening after falling from a five-story parking garage in Harrison, according to school district officials.
Mark Anthony Giordano was riding his bicycle with friends on the top floor of the Metro-North parking garage at the Harrison train station around 6 p.m. when he was involved in an accident, according to News 12 sources. The boy was catapulted off his bike and over the edge of the structure.
First responders were called to the scene, but Giordano could not be saved and was pronounced dead. Harrison police are investigating the incident but have not released details. A family member told News 12 that no foul play is suspected.
Giordano, an eighth grader at Lewis M. Klein Middle School, was a standout athlete and was on the high school football and wrestling teams. He wrestled at 220 pounds and was an All-League wrestler at 220 pounds and a Sectional Championship qualifier.
"Mark was an amazing young man who accomplished so much in so little time," a post on the Harrison High School wrestling team's Facebook page said. "His potential on the mats as well as the football field was unlimited. But most important, he was always respectful, polite and a wonderful loving teammate, brother and son."
Harrison resident Stacy Marinelli says her daughter, along with the other students at Lewis M. Klein Middle School, are devastated "It's very hard because she said how am I going to go to class for 8 periods and not be next to him."
Louis N. Wool, Ed.D., superintendent of schools in Harrison, released the following statement:
"Nothing is more difficult to fathom nor more tragic to experience than the loss of a child. Sunday, June 9, 2024, an eighth-grade student at our middle school, Mark Anthony Giordano, was in a fatal accident.
Mark was beloved by his teachers, coaches, and friends. Our exceptional faculty, coaches, and SROs stepped in immediately to support his family and our students.
We have mobilized support for our middle and high school students, faculty, and staff and extend that support to anyone in our schools who may have known this resilient and remarkable young man.
If your child has been impacted by Mark's tragic death and needs support, please reach out to your principal.
In moments of extraordinary tragedy, I am always comforted by the generosity and love our community shows to those most in need and one another."
A GoFundMe page has been set up to support the boy's family.
