The Westchester County Health Department announced the temporary closure of 11 area beaches.

Health department officials say Westchester has received 0.59 inches of rainfall over the last 24 hours, causing possible sewer runoff.

As a result the following beaches have been closed:

MAMARONECK: Harbor Island, Beach Point Club, Orienta Beach Club, and Mamaroneck Beach and Yacht Club

RYE: Coveleigh Club

NEW ROCHELLE: Hudson Park Beach, Davenport Club, Greentree Club, and Surf Club

Two other beaches are closed due to the discovery of harmful algae blooms.

MOHEGAN LAKE : Mohegan Colony Association and Mohegan Beach Park District.

The two are the only county-regulated beaches on Mohegan Lake. Health officials say harmful blooms are caused by the rapid growth of algae in the water, which can happen when water temperatures rise. Some blooms make toxins that can sicken people and animals. For the beaches to reopen, the algae and any possible sewage must be completely cleared from the swim area. Once that happens, water samples will be taken and tested to make sure it's safe to go in the water.

Health officials say people can go on the Westchester County website for updates on beach closures and reopening schedules throughout the season.
