Yonkers residents are recalling the city's desegregation battle of the 1980s and '90s ahead of the premiere of the HBO miniseries "Show Me a Hero."
The real-life drama hits home for many still living in the city, including Nelida Moreno, who moved to the east side of Yonkers from the west. She cites her son's safety as her reason for relocating.
Moreno's neighbor, Cookie Ramsey, says she is eagerly awaiting the premiere and hopes it has a positive impact.
Jeanne Zaino, a political science professor at Iona College, says that while the series will stir up possibly negative memories, she hopes it will also spur discussions of unity.
"We've been living this right up until today in other complexities," she says. "It can absolutely generate those heated and emotional feelings. I hope it will be on the side of talking and discussing."
The six-part series was filmed at the housing complex on Clark Street last fall and winter.
"Show Me a Hero" premieres Sunday night on HBO.
