Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced today the start of a $39 million affordable housing development and community center construction in Yonkers.
Westhab will turn the former vacant lot at 217 Elm St. in southwest Yonkers into the Dayspring Commons.
According to Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, “Dayspring Campus will bring affordable housing and crucial services to our community in Yonkers. This facility will include 63 units, of which 37 will be reserved for individuals experiencing homelessness, families with special needs, and young adult parents to help ensure they have the services and support they need. Additionally, the Dayspring Community Center will have provide local employment, counseling and childcare services.”
Westhab CEO Richard Nightingale believes the new addition will revitalize the community.
“This will be the center, you know, of community life in this neighborhood, that’s why we think Dayspring is so truly transformative. It’s more than a building, it’s more than a community center. The sum is bigger than the parts. It’s really about reinventing the community,” says Nightingale.
Cuomo assured the southwest Yonkers community that the campus will provide the necessary services to promote growth and decrease homelessness.
News 12 was told construction is expected to be complete with a ribbon-cutting ceremony by fall 2021.
