The Yonkers Department of Public Works continued giving out free sandbags Friday as rain and the storm surge battered coastal areas.

The DPW Commissioner Thomas Meier says crews have been preparing for the nor'easter for a couple of days.

"There could be flash-flooding, so don't drive over deep puddles," Meier says. "Drive carefully."

Leading up to storms with the potential to cause flooding, the DPW Organic Waste Yard on Nepperhan Avenue has been giving out sandbags until 9 p.m.

"For those people coming home from work who still have a little bit of time to make sure their homes are protected from flooding can come here and get their sandbags," Meier says.

For some residents, like the students at Riverside High School, getting home proved troublesome during the storm.

Dorizell Perez and her friends say the weather delayed their school bus.

"It's cold, and I'm never cold," she says. "I hope this bus comes, because I want to go home."
