Tractor-trailer overturns on Mario Cuomo Bridge, backs up traffic

A tractor-trailer tipped over on the Gov. Mario Cuomo Bridge Friday, causing a major traffic jam as foul weather slammed roadways across the Hudson Valley.
Police say the second trailer on a tandem tractor-trailer toppled around 10:15 a.m. As a result, Thruway Authority banned tractor-trailers, motorcycles or commercial vehicles from using the bridge Friday afternoon.
Three of the northbound lanes of the span were closed for about an hour, and traffic was backed up in both directions for miles.
All lanes have since reopened. There are no reports of any injuries.
Beneath the bridge, authorities say eight barges came loose from their moorings. Two were retrieved and tethered to shore, one was found partially submerged in the Hudson River and five remain unaccounted for.
With the relentless wind continuing to whip the area, officials are urging drivers to be extra careful.
