The 6-year-old girl who was seriously injured in a school bus crash in Orange County Wednesday is recovering from a deep laceration to the leg and two broken bones.
Officials say the girl was transferred from St. Lukes's Hospital in Newburgh to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla.
New Windsor police say the girl was among eight children from Little Britain Elementary School who were on board the bus just before 8:30 a.m. when a truck from Flannagan’s Tree Service Truck tree crossed a double yellow line on Route 207 in New Windsor and crashed into the bus and a third vehicle.
Police say the driver of the tree truck, Ian Jennings, 25, is in stable condition at Garnett Health.  The driver of the bus, Andrew Sanchez, 74, is in stable condition in the ICU at St. Luke’s Hospital.
Seven of the children were all treated and released. Family members tell News 12 that the 6-year-old girl is a fighter. Her uncle, Bill Campbell, says his niece was stuck on the bus for an hour before rescuers got her out. "She's got some trauma. She's a tough kid, she didn't cry a bit. She told her mom she did her yoga breaths to stay calm," said Campbell.
Investigators are still trying to figure out exactly what caused the crash.
The school district's website states all new buses have seatbelts, but it's not clear if the students were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
