A Torrington teen went into his kitchen Monday and came face-to-face with a 1-year-old female black bear.
State officials say wildlife officers later euthanized it.
Carlos Novicky, 18, was alone upstairs in his family's Winsted Road house when he heard noises. He says at first he thought he heard his cats -- but he realized the noise was too loud to be them.
Authorities say the bear entered through a screen window and swiped a loaf of bread off the kitchen counter.
Novicky went into the kitchen, encountered the animal and ran back upstairs, he says. From there, he called his mom.
"I was just praying that it didn't start charging me," he says.
The bear didn't follow, and Novicky's mother told him to call authorities.
By the time they arrived, the bear had left with the bread. They killed it outside.
Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection says protocol required officers to euthanize the animal because it had entered a home.
No humans were hurt.
Other town residents say bear sightings are common in the area -- but stories of them entering homes are not.
DEEP says that between June 2017 and May 2018 there were 115 bear sightings in Torrington alone.
