The Westchester County Board of Legislators overrode County Executive Rob Astorino's veto of the 2018 budget with a unanimous vote Thursday.
Astorino's budget would have capped property taxes, but some county jobs were on the line, including at the Parks and Engineering departments.
Earlier this month, the board voted 12-5 on an amended budget, but Astorino vetoed it Monday and sent the board back to the drawing board.
This will be the first property tax increase in Westchester County in eight years. Homeowners will have a 2 percent tax increase.
"In order to restore services, get Westchester working again, repair our roads and bridges, I think most people are willing to pay the cost of approximately four lattes over the course of a year at Starbucks,” says Majority Leader Catherine Borgia.
A spokesperson for the Astorino administration tells News 12 that “an override of the budget veto signals a return to the sock-it-to-the-taxpayers model of Westchester County government, and the tax hike couldn't come at a worse time, with Washington about to cap state and local property tax deductions. The most irresponsible and most hypocritical thing to do is to hike our already sky-high taxes.”
