Two parishioners arrested at Yonkers church protest vow to file lawsuit
A protest to keep one Yonkers church open ends with two parishioners facing charges and the archdiocese looking at a lawsuit.
Michael Costa and Nuno Ribeiro were arrested Sunday after police say they refused to leave Our Lady of the Rosary church following a staged vigil. The two men were charged with trespassing and are now vowing to file a lawsuit against the New York Archdiocese. Parishioners have been fighting the New York Archdiocese's decision to close Our Lady of the Rosary, which is just one of many slated to shut for good. The archdiocese says Our Lady of the Rosary had to close because there were not enough parishioners. In addition, Cardinal Edward Egan said the closings had to do with meeting the needs of a shifting Catholic population.
Both men are due back in Yonkers City Court Thursday.
