A Turn to Tara investigation reveals that nearly one-third of Westchester’s county roads are in poor condition.
County-run roads are critical to the local economy and are used by hundreds of thousands of people every day, but News 12 has found that many are unsafe and in dire need of repairs.
The pockmarked pavement and cracked roads have resulted in flat tires and broken axles.
News 12's investigation into a crucial roadway performance test known as the Pavement Condition Index, or PCI, found nearly one-third of the 150 miles of roads run by the county received a failing grade.
Each road was assigned a score of zero to 100.  A total of 168 streets fell below 70, meaning they are in poor, and in some cases, deplorable condition.
A cracked and sunken stretch of Washington Avenue in Pleasantville got a score of 35 - the lowest ranked in Westchester.
Legislator MaryJane Shimsky says she thinks the county risks becoming a laughing stock if repairs don't happen soon.

One problem, however, is that there aren't enough county engineers, with nearly half the staff it had just a decade ago.
"This is a fiscal crisis in the making that we cannot ignore," says Shimsky.
