A Tremont McDonald's plagued with drug sales and drug use now has a brand new look.
The McDonalds at 599 Tremont Ave. used to be a known as a drug hotbed, but after its recent renovation and its grand reopening Thursday, community members say they feel safer stopping in and grabbing a bite to eat.
News 12 has followed the changes happening in the Tremont area to increase public safety, and this makeover is one of many steps in a plan created by a coalition to do just that.
The McDonald's now has NYPD security detail and surveillance video that can be accessed by police remotely.
Tony Rodriguez, the owner of the fast food spot, says he is excited about what this means for the neighborhood.
"It's a wonderful experience, the store looks great. I am sure the community loves it and enjoys it and I just wanted to do this mostly for the community because the community deserves better," says Rodriguez.
Rodriguez was presented with a plaque by Councilman Ritchie Torres for his work in the community.
Rodriguez says he plans to host community events at his McDonald's location.
