Colleagues, loved ones and other supporters celebrated the lives of NYPD detectives Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu Friday at P.S. 239 in Ridgewood, Queens, by giving back to the community.
Thursday was the fourth anniversary of the Bed-Stuy killings of Ramos and Liu. This was the second year the Detective Rafael Ramos Foundation organized a toy drive dedicated to the two men.
The NYPD Jazz Band was on hand to provide holiday music, and children were delighted by visits from Santa, Mrs. Claus and their elves. Then came the moment the kids had been waiting for: presents. NYPD officers and U.S. Marines handed out gifts.
"I love the expression on their faces," said Staff Sgt. Garcia.
The positive interactions are one of the reasons for the foundation.
Family members of other officers killed in the line of duty joined the Ramos and Liu families to show support. Those guests included the widow and daughter of Officer Ramon Suarez, the school's namesake who was killed on 9/11.
They'll choose a new school next year to continue spreading love and to help ensure the fallen officers are never forgotten.
