Thousands sign petition to save Port Chester firefighters’ jobs
Thousands of people have signed a petition to save the jobs of the laid-off Port Chester firefighters.
The eight laid-off firefighters marched into the Port Chester Village Hall on Wednesday with a 450-page petition signed by more than 4,000 people.
The village fired the paid firefighters and retained its volunteer staff due to budget cuts.
The petition calls for a referendum so residents can vote on whether to bring them back. The village has 30 days to respond to the petition.
Residents are expected to turn out next Monday at a regularly scheduled meeting to voice their concerns about the fire department.
