Target backtracks after including Mount Vernon store on list of closures
Major retail chain Target reversed course Sunday by announcing it is not temporarily closing its Mount Vernon store amid nationwide protests and unrest.
The protests follow the death of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer.
Target announced this weekend that about 100 stores across the country were closing temporarily following protests that have occasionally erupted in violence.
The Mount Vernon location was on the list originally, but later removed.
Several others in New York were also on the original list, but now just the Brooklyn location will close, according to Target's website.
Around one-third of the Target stores shutting down are in the state of Minnesota.
The company wrote in a statement: "We are heartbroken by the death of George Floyd and the pain it is causing communities across the country. At this time, we have made the decision to close a number of our stores. We anticipate most stores will be closed temporarily."
As for the employees at the shuttered stores, Target says they'll be paid for up to 14 days of scheduled hours during store closures, including COVID-19 premium pay.
