Minneapolis-based Target said that it's temporarily closing dozens of U.S. stores amid unrest across the nation -- but the chain later revised a list of affected stores and removed most New York locations from its list.
In a press release on its corporate website, the retail chain said, "We are heartbroken by the death of George Floyd and the pain it is causing communities across the country. At this time, we have made the decision to close a number of our stores. We anticipate most stores will be closed temporarily. Our focus will remain on our team members’ safety and helping our community heal."
Target's website originally included 12 New York stores that would be affected, including several in the Bronx and Brooklyn, one in Westchester and two on Long Island. But News 12 contacted Target representatives Sunday morning and was told that several East Coast stores would not be among the affected stores to close. News 12 visited to the two Long Island stores and both were open Sunday morning.
Target later revised the list on its website to include only six New York stores that would be closed, then adjusted it again to include only one New York store -- Brooklyn Junction.
Target says it will assist affected workers. "We are providing our team members with direct communications updates regarding any store impact where they work. Additionally, team members impacted by store closures will be paid for up to 14 days of scheduled hours during store closures, including COVID-19 premium pay. They will also be able to work at other nearby Target locations," the chain's press release says.
