A group of veterans from Suffolk announced Thursday "Operation Remember," an effort to update four war memorials in the county.

A 100-year-old monument in Setauket honors those who served in World War I. But some memorials have not been updated past the Vietnam War, chronologically.

Carlton Edwards is still haunted by memories of serving in the Korean War. The 89-year-old is currently the commander of Setauket American Legion Irving Hart Post No. 1766 in Setauket.

Veteran Jack Gozdziewski is leading the charge to update the memorials, he says, after watching Gulf War veterans at last year's Memorial Day services.

"If the site did not reflect the conflict I served in, how would I feel?" he asked.

The initiative will update and repair four monuments -- two in Setauket and one each in Stony Brook and Port Jefferson. The goal is to raise enough funds to have the memorials updated by Memorial Day 2019.
