Suffolk legislators introduced several bills Wednesday that would ban polystyrene containers and plastic straws.

Legislator Kara Hahn (D-Setauket) explained that there are four bills being considered. One would make plastic straws “by request only” in restaurants. The others focus on cutting down on waste created by polystyrene containers, installing more water bottle refill stations and making sure county concessionaires don’t use plastic straws or utensils.

Steve Camas, the owner of Marco’s in Huntington Station, says switching to paper goods is no big deal.

“When we first opened we wanted to do the right thing environmentally, so we stayed away from the clam shell,” says Camas – referring to the Styrofoam containers.

Suffolk legislators say they will hold several public hearings on the proposed plastic ban legislation in March. They expect to vote on the bills by April.
