Some kids in Westchester got a firsthand account of the horrors of the Holocaust.

Jay Sommer, a Nazi labor camp survivor, spoke to students Tuesday at Tuckahoe Middle School about his experiences.

The 90-year-old recounted his desperation to escape the Nazis. For six months, Sommer lived as a fugitive in constant fear and he said he wasn't alone. "It's not only Jewish people who were exposed to this kind of cruelty. You know there were Irish people who suffered, Italians who suffered...it's a universal problem."

Nearly 6 million people died in Nazi camps. Sommer's visit comes as the students learn about the Holocaust during their study of World War II.
