Stray bullet strikes, injures 5-year-old girl in Newark
Authorities say a stray bullet struck and injured a 5-year-old girl as she walked with her father Wednesday night.
Newark police say the shooting occurred around 11:30 p.m. in the area of Treacy and Avon avenues.
The bullet struck Aliya Williams in the leg, and she was taken to a hospital for treatment. The injury is not considered life-threatening, but further details on her condition were not disclosed.
Neighbors tell News 12 New Jersey that they heard the gunshots, but that they thought that the sounds were fireworks for the Fourth of July celebration. They say that when they heard that a young girl was shot, they were furious.
“I was up until 6 a.m. and I still thought they were fireworks,” says Kim Clark. “I don’t know if it’s fireworks or gunshots so I don’t come out.”
Clark says that she thinks sometimes people use the sounds of fireworks to cover up shootings.
Authorities say it's not yet known what sparked the shooting. But no other injuries were reported.
They are asking anyone who may have any information about the shooting to call the 24-hour Crime Stopper tip line at 1-877-NWK-TIPS (1-877-695-8477) or 1-877-NWK-GUNS (1-877-695-4867).
A reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest and indictment.
The Associated Press wire services contributed to this report.
